Early Education and Career Beginnings

Mike Roman began his academic journey at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he was involved in activities such as UWSP Pointer Football. He then transferred to the University of Minnesota, earning a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. The University of Minnesota, located in Minneapolis, is a public research university known for its strong engineering programs. Roman furthered his education by obtaining a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC), a private research university in Los Angeles renowned for its engineering school and notable alumni like astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Hughes Aircraft Company

After completing his education, Roman started his professional career at Hughes Aircraft Company, where he worked as a Group Head from 1983 to 1988. Hughes Aircraft was a major American aerospace and defense contractor and an important player in the development of technology for the military and space exploration.

Three Decades at 3M

In 1988, Roman joined 3M, a multinational conglomerate known for its research and development in various fields, including healthcare, consumer goods, and worker safety. 3M, headquartered in the Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul Area, is recognized for its innovative culture and products like Post-it Notes and Scotch Tape. Roman started as a Senior Design Engineer and progressed through multiple leadership roles, demonstrating his ability to drive growth and innovation.

Leadership and Global Experience

Roman's tenure at 3M is marked by a series of executive positions that reflect his expanding leadership responsibilities. He served as Lab Manager, Program Manager, and European Business Unit Director, where he managed operations in the Brussels Area, Belgium. His international experience was further broadened as the Managing Director of 3M Korea, based in Seoul, and as Asia Vice President for the 3M Optical Systems Division, where he was stationed in Korea.

Executive Roles and CEO Appointment

Roman's ascent continued as he took on roles such as Six Sigma Director, Vice President and General Manager of various divisions, including the Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division and the Renewable Energy Division. His strategic vision and operational expertise culminated in his appointment as Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President in 2017. A year later, in July 2018, Roman was named Chief Executive Officer of 3M, and in May 2019, he became the Chairman of the Board.

Under Roman's leadership, 3M has focused on key priorities such as portfolio management, transformation, innovation, and people & culture. The company has been recognized for its ethical practices and commitment to diversity and inclusion, winning the Catalyst Award in 2017.
